A big renovation is in the works for the plaza outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

According to media reports, the renovation will include the replacement of the museum's faulty fountains, crumbling sidewalks and sick trees along the two block stretch of Fifth Avenue from East 82nd to East 84th Streets.

Several New York City landmarks have been ranked the most visited in the world.

According to a survey of Travel and Leisure readers, the Statue of Liberty, which is currently closed for renovation, tops the list with the Empire State Building coming in second.

Coming in third place is San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, following by the the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Posada's retirement, leaves only Derek Jeter and Marino Rivera as the only two member of the "Core of Four."

New York's Archbishop Timothy Dolan has receive the highest order possible. He was named a cardinal of the nation's largest archdioceses by the Pope on Friday.

The 61-year-old Dolan, who was installed as archbishop of New York on April 15, 2009 following the retirement of Cardinal Edward Egan, will be officially be elevated to his new post on February 18 in Rome.

Less than four months after it open, visitors to the National September 11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan has reach a milestone.

Meanwhile, a museum on the site that was suppose to be part of the Memorial, has had its opening day delayed due to a financial dispute between the Port Authority, which owns the site, and the organizers of the Memorial.

Despite the recession, New York City is on track towards a record number of tourists in 2011. 

According to WABC-TV, 50 million people visited New York this year, surpassing the city's 2010 record by one million. This translated in a reported $47 billion in revenue to the city.

In reality, no. If you're going to be standing in Times Square to see the ball drop you don't need a ticket. Just show up early and plan for a long stay.

Construction workers and electricians at the new 1 World Trade Center (aka The Freedom Tower) volunteered their time recently and wrapped the building's interior lights in cellophane to create the colors of the holiday season, as seen in the photo above.

The lights were first revealed on Tuesday night.

NBA players and the union representing them rejected the league's latest offer Monday and began disbanding the union, likely jeopardizing the rest of 2011-2012 basketball season.

This is not setting well with NBA fans, specially New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets fans, who are now face with game cancellation through December 15.

New York most famous Christmas tree arrived in the city from Pennsylvania early Friday morning and it was hoisted into place. Another sign that the holiday season is around the corner.

Another sign that the holiday season is almost here. This year's Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree comes the Keystone State.

A 70-foot (21 meter) tall Norway spruce from Mifflinville, PA, a small rural town about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Scranton, was cut down Wednesday morning and loaded onto a flatbed tractor-trailer for the trip to Manhattan.

Discount clothing retailer Syms, famous for its company's slogan, "An Educated Consumer Is Our Best Customer," and its Filene's Basement subsidiary filed for Chapter 11 protection Wednesday. 

Both retailers will close all of their stores, including the one in Lower Manhattan at Rector and Church Streets by the end of the year as part of the filing.

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake was felt up and down the Eastern Seaboard Tuesday from Massachusetts to South Carolina. The epicenter was in Mineral, VA about 90 miles (144 km) south-southwest of Washington, DC and 350 miles (563 km) south-southwest of New York City.
